Learning (Psycho-Educational) Assessments

Neurospa Psychology provides psychoeducational assessments in Adelaide conducted by our AHPRA-registered psychologists. Our assessments deliver comprehensive clinical reports, providing the diagnostic evidence and specific recommendations required to access school accommodations, educational adjustments, and NDIS support services without delay.

What Our Psychoeducational Assessment Covers

A psychoeducational assessment at Neurospa Psychology evaluates two core domains simultaneously: intellectual functioning, which measures how an individual thinks, reasons, and processes information, and academic achievement across reading, writing, and numeracy. This discrepancy between cognitive ability and academic performance provides the clinical basis for identifying a specific learning disorder.

We assess for the three most prevalent specific learning disorders: dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. Our assessments provide the clinical documentation you need to access school accommodations, educational adjustments, and NDIS support services.

Who This Assessment Is For

A psychoeducational assessment at Neurospa Psychology is appropriate where academic performance has consistently fallen below what cognitive ability would suggest, providing a clinical explanation for persistent learning difficulties across the lifespan. This assessment is recommended for:

  • School-aged children (aged 5 to 17) who have received teacher concerns or learning support recommendations but have not yet received a formal diagnosis.
  • Children who experience persistent difficulty with reading accuracy, spelling consistency, or numeracy despite sustained effort and regular instruction.
  • Students who demonstrate stronger verbal ability than written or timed task performance, a common presentation in undiagnosed specific learning disorders.
  • Older students and young adults who have consistently found academic work disproportionately difficult relative to their intellectual ability.

Neurospa Psychology also conducts psychoeducational assessments upon referral from schools, General Practitioners, and paediatricians across Adelaide.

How the Psychoeducational Assessment Works

Every psychoeducational assessment at Neurospa Psychology follows a structured, five-stage process, ensuring clinical accuracy while keeping you and your child informed and supported at every stage.

Following your booking, validated questionnaires are emailed for completion prior to the assessment session. Parents and teachers each complete a separate form. Please allow approximately 20 minutes per form. Completing these in advance keeps the assessment session focused entirely on your child.

A 30-minute clinical interview is conducted at the start of the assessment session to gather information about your child’s developmental history, school feedback, and what you have observed at home. This context is essential to ensuring the assessment is appropriately tailored to your child’s specific presentation.

A structured face-to-face assessment session of approximately 2.5 hours is conducted at our Hilton, SA clinic. Sessions are calm, supportive, and carefully structured. There are no right or wrong answers. The session is designed to produce an accurate picture of how your child thinks, learns, and processes information.

A comprehensive written clinical report is prepared covering all assessment findings, a formal diagnosis where diagnostic criteria are met, and specific evidence-based recommendations for school accommodations, home strategies, and support applications. Report preparation takes approximately two to three weeks, and the completed report is emailed to you prior to your feedback consultation.

A 30-minute telehealth consultation is scheduled to review the report findings together. All findings are explained in plain language, and clear next steps are outlined. Families are warmly encouraged to bring every question to this session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a psychoeducational assessment and a school-based assessment?

School-based assessments typically use screening tools designed to identify students who may require additional learning support. A psychoeducational assessment conducted by a registered psychologist at Neurospa Psychology uses standardised clinical instruments to confirm or rule out a formal diagnosis. A school assessment identifies that a difficulty exists. A clinical assessment determines what it is, why it is occurring, and what specific interventions and accommodations are required.

Neurospa Psychology assesses children from five years of age. The most clinically reliable results are typically obtained from age six onwards, once formal reading and writing instruction has commenced. Earlier identification supports earlier intervention, which has a well-established direct impact on academic and functional outcomes across both primary and secondary schooling.

Yes. Schools and the SACE Board require a formal diagnostic report from a registered psychologist to approve the majority of accommodation and adjustment requests. Every report produced by Neurospa Psychology is written with direct classroom application in mind and includes specific, evidence-based recommendations that classroom teachers and learning support coordinators can implement without requiring further documentation.

Yes. Dyslexia is among the most common referral reasons presented to Neurospa Psychology. Assessments use standardised clinical tools evaluating phonological awareness, reading fluency, and decoding accuracy. Where dyslexia is identified, the diagnostic report names it explicitly and provides evidence-based intervention recommendations appropriate to the child’s age, profile, and school setting.
