How NDIS Funding Works for Children’s Assessments
Psychological assessments for children can be funded through the NDIS under the Capacity Building — Assessment support category. This applies to both initial diagnostic assessments (to gain NDIS access) and ongoing assessments (to support plan reviews or demonstrate functional capacity).
Self-Managed Participants
If you self-manage your child’s NDIS plan, you can book directly with Neurospa Psychology and claim the assessment cost from your Capacity Building budget. We provide a detailed invoice with all required information for your claim.
Plan-Managed Participants
If your child’s plan is managed by a plan manager, we can invoice your plan manager directly. Simply provide your plan manager’s details when booking and we will handle the rest.
Agency-Managed Participants
For agency-managed (NDIA-managed) plans, a service booking is required before the assessment can proceed. Please contact us to discuss your options — we can guide you through the process.
Assessments for NDIS Access Requests
If your child is not yet an NDIS participant but you believe they may be eligible, a psychological assessment can provide the diagnostic evidence required for an access request. The NDIS requires evidence that your child has a permanent disability that significantly impacts their functional capacity.
Our assessment reports are specifically written to address NDIS access criteria, including:
- Formal diagnosis using DSM-5 criteria
- Evidence of permanence of the condition
- Detailed description of functional impairment across life domains
- Impact on daily living, learning, communication, and social participation
- Recommendations for supports and interventions
Conditions that commonly qualify children for NDIS access include intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, global developmental delay, and significant specific learning disorders with substantial functional impact.
Assessments for NDIS Plan Reviews
If your child is already an NDIS participant and you need updated evidence for a plan review or to request increased funding, our assessments provide current, comprehensive documentation of your child’s needs. Updated cognitive and functional assessments can demonstrate:
- Current level of functioning and support needs
- Progress since last assessment
- Ongoing or increased support requirements
- Justification for specific therapies or assistive technology
- Evidence for school support funding

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use NDIS funding for my child’s assessment even if they don’t have a diagnosis yet?
If your child is already an NDIS participant, yes — assessment costs can be claimed under Capacity Building. If your child is not yet on the NDIS and needs a diagnostic assessment to apply for access, the initial assessment would typically be privately funded or covered by Medicare/private health insurance.
How long is the waitlist for NDIS assessments?
There is no waitlist at Neurospa Psychology. We can typically schedule your child’s assessment within the same week you contact us — a significant advantage over most Adelaide practices where waits of 6-12 months are common.
Will the report be accepted by the NDIA?
Yes. Our reports are written by AHPRA registered psychologists and specifically address NDIS evidence requirements including diagnosis, permanence, functional impact, and support recommendations. We have extensive experience writing reports that meet NDIA standards.
Do I need a referral to book an NDIS assessment?
No referral is required. You can book directly with Neurospa Psychology. If your child has existing reports from a paediatrician, school, or other professionals, these can be helpful but are not mandatory.
What conditions can be diagnosed through your assessments?
Our psychologists can diagnose intellectual disability, specific learning disorders (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia), autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental conditions that may qualify your child for NDIS support.
How quickly will I receive the report?
Reports are completed within 2 weeks of the final assessment session. If you have an urgent NDIS deadline (such as a plan review meeting), please let us know and we can prioritise your report.
