Cognitive Assessment for Children Adelaide — IQ Testing (WISC-V)

Neurospa Psychology provides comprehensive cognitive assessments (IQ testing) for children and adolescents in Adelaide. Using the gold-standard WISC-V, our registered psychologists assess your child’s intellectual abilities to identify giftedness, learning difficulties, intellectual disability, or cognitive processing weaknesses. No waitlist. No referral needed. Appointments available this week.

What Is a Cognitive Assessment?

A cognitive assessment (also called an IQ test or intellectual assessment) measures how your child thinks, reasons, and processes information. It provides a detailed profile of your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses across multiple domains, giving you and your child’s school a clear understanding of how they learn best.

At Neurospa Psychology, we use the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children — Fifth Edition (WISC-V), which is the most widely used and respected cognitive assessment tool for children aged 6-16. For children aged 4-7, we may also use the WPPSI-IV.

What Does the WISC-V Measure?

The WISC-V provides scores across five key cognitive domains:

  • Verbal Comprehension — vocabulary, general knowledge, verbal reasoning, and the ability to express ideas in words
  • Visual-Spatial — the ability to analyse and construct visual patterns, understand spatial relationships, and think in pictures
  • Fluid Reasoning — logical thinking, pattern recognition, and the ability to solve novel problems without relying on prior knowledge
  • Working Memory — the ability to hold information in mind and manipulate it mentally (critical for following instructions and mental arithmetic)
  • Processing Speed — how quickly and accurately your child can scan, identify, and respond to visual information

Together, these scores produce a Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) and reveal the specific cognitive profile that influences how your child learns, pays attention, and performs academically.

Why Get a Cognitive Assessment for Your Child?

Parents seek cognitive assessments for many reasons:

  • Learning difficulties — understanding why your child is struggling at school despite seeming capable
  • Gifted identification — evidence for gifted programs, acceleration, or enrichment
  • Intellectual disability diagnosis — formal assessment for NDIS access or school placement
  • School accommodations — evidence for extra time, modified curriculum, or special provisions
  • NDIS evidence — cognitive assessment is required for many NDIS access requests and plan reviews
  • Understanding attention issues — distinguishing between cognitive processing weaknesses and ADHD
  • Part of a psychoeducational assessment — cognitive testing forms the foundation of a full learning assessment

What to Expect During the Assessment

The cognitive assessment is conducted one-on-one with your child by a registered psychologist in a quiet, supportive environment. The process includes:

  1. Pre-assessment intake — we gather background information about your child’s developmental and educational history
  2. Testing session — your child completes a series of engaging tasks and puzzles (approximately 2-3 hours for cognitive testing alone)
  3. Scoring and interpretation — our psychologist analyses the results in the context of your child’s history and presenting concerns
  4. Comprehensive report — a detailed written report explaining your child’s cognitive profile, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations
  5. Feedback session — we explain the results to you in plain language and discuss next steps

Children generally find the assessment engaging — the tasks are varied and interactive, more like puzzles and games than a school test.

Understanding Cognitive Assessment Results

Cognitive assessment scores are standardised with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. General ranges include:

  • 130+ — Very Superior (gifted range)
  • 120-129 — Superior
  • 110-119 — High Average
  • 90-109 — Average
  • 80-89 — Low Average
  • 70-79 — Borderline
  • Below 70 — Extremely Low (may indicate intellectual disability when combined with adaptive behaviour deficits)

However, the overall IQ score is only part of the picture. The pattern of strengths and weaknesses across the five domains often provides the most clinically useful information for understanding your child’s learning profile.

Cognitive Assessment vs Psychoeducational Assessment

A cognitive assessment focuses specifically on intellectual abilities (how your child thinks). A psychoeducational assessment combines cognitive testing with academic achievement testing to identify specific learning disorders such as dyslexia or dyscalculia. If your primary concern is academic performance, a full psychoeducational assessment may be more appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can children have a cognitive assessment?

Children can be assessed from age 4 using the WPPSI-IV, and from age 6 using the WISC-V. The WISC-V is valid for children and adolescents aged 6-16 years.

How long does a cognitive assessment take?

The testing session typically takes 2-3 hours. If combined with academic testing (psychoeducational assessment), the total assessment time is 4-6 hours across 1-2 sessions.

Do I need a referral for a cognitive assessment?

No referral is required. You can book directly with Neurospa Psychology at any time.

Can the NDIS fund a cognitive assessment?

Yes. Cognitive assessments can be funded through the NDIS for self-managed and plan-managed participants under Capacity Building — Assessment. Learn more about our NDIS children’s assessments.

Is there a waitlist?

No. Neurospa Psychology has no waitlist for cognitive assessments. We can typically schedule your child’s assessment within the same week of enquiry.

How often can a cognitive assessment be repeated?

Cognitive assessments should generally not be repeated within 12-24 months due to practice effects. If a reassessment is needed sooner, alternative measures may be used.
